He’s Listening

Be Careful What you say with Children Around

I think my son was 10 – what’s that 3rd grade? Anyway, I was explaining to my lovely wife how as soon a John A had left his office with all his boxes on his way to a happy retirement, I was in MY boss’s office asking if I could move into John A’s corner office. “Sure”, he said, and I was gone!

Down in the Building Maintenance area, I met with Vinnie and picked out a small secretary desk. “You don’t want a big Executive Desk with Credenza ?” Vinnie asked. I explained I wanted my desk along one wall facing the windows. I want to see outside – not sit with my back to the windows. I got a circular table and put it in the middle of the room with NO chairs in front of my small desk. When someone came into my office, I’d get up and we would sit at the table and talk.

The view outside was woods and parking lot, but it was my view and I was proud of it and My lovely wife shared my feeling. My son was listening. Several days later, at dinner to the question “What happened at school, today”, he answered, “We had what does your Dad do today”.

I said I didn’t remember him asking me what I did. He replied, “I heard you tell Mom that you sit in your office and look out the windows so that’s what I told my class you do every day.” We had a good laugh and I agreed with him.
